Viking ship natural Baltic amber sculpture — a day at the bench inside the KIZIMA workshop, handcrafted in Brooklyn USA

A Day at the Bench: Inside the KIZIMA® Workshop

Most of what people see from KIZIMA® is a finished photo on a product page. Here's what happens before that — a rough outline of an actual working day at the bench.

Morning: sorting raw stone

The day usually starts with raw amber — sorting a batch by color, clarity, and size against whatever's currently being made, whether that's a custom commission or restocking a popular piece.

Midday: cutting and shaping

Cutting is slow, deliberate work — amber is soft enough to shape without heavy machinery, but that same softness means a wrong move ruins a stone that took millions of years to form. Most pieces get shaped, then set aside to be checked again after a break, with fresh eyes.

Afternoon: setting and polishing

Metalwork happens in the afternoon — bezels, prongs, and bails built or adjusted to fit the specific stone, since amber cabochons rarely come in perfectly standard sizes. Polishing is the last, slowest step, and the one that decides whether a piece looks handmade or looks finished.
