The Amber Book — Chapter 21
Two ancient aristocrats — the game of kings and the stone of the sun — met centuries ago in the workshops of Königsberg, and neither has been the same since. This chapter opens Part V of our book: the collection itself, beginning where our own catalog begins — with chess.
Why chess and amber belong together
Chess needed contrast; amber offered the most beautiful contrast in nature — transparent honey against opaque royal white, cognac against butterscotch. Chess needed gravitas; amber brought forty million years of it. And chess pieces are, at heart, tiny sculptures — the exact art the amber guilds had perfected. The marriage was inevitable, and the guild masters of the 17th century performed it magnificently: their combined chess-and-game boards traveled to royal courts, and one — as readers of Chapter 10 know — rests today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Playing with light
An amber chess set does something no wooden or marble set can: it changes with the day. Morning light turns the honey side to fire; lamplight makes the white side glow like moonlit ice. Players describe the strange pleasure of a knight that warms in the hand mid-game. It is the only chess set that participates in the atmosphere of the room.
