Genuine Baltic amber chess set KÖNIGSBERG Imperial handcrafted in Brooklyn USA by KIZIMA — frozen sunlight amber craftsmanship

What Is Baltic Amber? Frozen Sunlight, Königsberg Heritage, and Handcraft in Brooklyn

Long before the first cities rose on the shores of the Baltic Sea, ancient pine forests wept golden resin into the sunlight. Over forty million years, that resin hardened, sank beneath the waves, and was polished by the sea itself. The people of the Baltic coast called it "Baltic gold." Scientists call it succinite. We simply call it what it has always been: frozen sunlight.

A stone that is not a stone

Baltic amber is not a mineral — it is fossilized tree resin, warm to the touch, light enough to float in salt water, and alive with color: honey, cognac, butterscotch, cherry, and the rare milky "royal white." No two pieces are ever alike. Hold a piece up to the light and you may find a forty-million-year-old air bubble, a drop of ancient water, or even a tiny insect that landed on the resin when mammoths had not yet walked the earth.

The Königsberg legacy

For centuries, the world capital of amber craftsmanship was Königsberg — the old Prussian city on the Baltic coast. Its guild masters carved amber chess sets, jewelry boxes, and works of art for the courts of Europe. One of those treasures, a 17th-century Königsberg amber chess board, rests today in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

KIZIMA® was founded by a master born in that very city. Our brand carries the Königsberg tradition across the ocean — and continues it by hand, in Brooklyn.

Handcrafted in the USA

Every KIZIMA® piece — from a delicate amber necklace to a full KÖNIGSBERG IMPERIAL chess set — is made in our Brooklyn workshop from genuine Baltic amber. We are the only Baltic amber manufacturer based in the United States. Nothing is imported as a finished product; every figurine, brooch, and keepsake box passes through our hands.

How to tell genuine Baltic amber

  • Warmth. Real amber feels warm, never cold like glass.
  • Weight. It is surprisingly light — genuine amber floats in saturated salt water.
  • Scent. Gently rubbed, it releases a faint pine-resin fragrance.
  • Character. Natural inclusions, cloudy swirls, and unique color are signs of authenticity, not flaws.

A gift that carries the sun

Amber has been treasured as an amulet of warmth, protection, and good fortune since the Stone Age. Whether it's a zodiac keychain, a saint figurine, or an heirloom chess set, a piece of Baltic amber is a piece of sunlight that has waited forty million years to find its owner.
