The Amber Book — Chapter 13
Feng shui — the Chinese art of arranging space — is built on a simple conviction: the objects around us shape the mood of a home. And in that tradition, few natural materials are as welcome as amber: a stone of pure yang — warmth, light, and the energy of the sun.
Why amber suits the home
Feng shui prizes materials that are natural, warm-toned, and alive with history — and amber is all three at once. Its honey and gold hues belong to the earth-and-fire palette associated with comfort, stability, and abundance. Where crystal cools a room, amber warms it; practitioners have long placed it where a home should feel most alive — the living room, the hearth, the family table.
The traditional placements
- Wealth corner (southeast). Golden amber — especially figurines of ships, fish, or elephants — is a classic symbol of arriving abundance. The "lucky ship" laden with amber cargo is the old merchant's talisman: may fortune sail in.
- The entrance. An amber piece near the door greets everyone who enters with warm light — the feng shui of first impressions.
- The family zone (east). Amber animals — the elephant for loyalty and luck, paired figures for harmony — traditionally guard the household's bonds.
- The study. An amber owl on the desk: wisdom watching over work.
East meets Baltic
There is a lovely symmetry here: Chinese tradition treasured amber for centuries — calling it hu po, "tiger's soul," believing the spirit of a tiger sank into the earth and became this golden stone. The Baltic and the East agreed, oceans apart, on the same intuition: amber is concentrated life-force in mineral form.
