Long before it became a design carved into stone, the Elder Futhark was a working alphabet. Used across Northern Europe roughly from the 2nd to the 8th century, it is the oldest known form of runic writing, and its twenty-four characters carried meaning well beyond the letters they represented. What Is the Elder Futhark?
The Elder Futhark is divided into three groups of eight runes, traditionally called Ættir. Each rune had a name and an association — with a natural force, an animal, a value, or an idea — alongside its function as a letter. Historians still debate exactly how the runes were used beyond writing, but the tradition of reading meaning into each symbol has persisted for centuries and remains part of how people engage with a rune set today.
From Symbol to Stone
Carving twenty-four distinct symbols into amber is slower and more exacting than working with a single repeated design. Each piece of Baltic amber used for a KIZIMA® Rune Set is selected individually, then hand-engraved so the lines of every rune stay clean and legible in the stone. Because amber varies naturally in tone and clarity, no two completed sets look quite alike, even when the symbols are identical.
